April 2022 Script of the Month

April’s Script of the Month, as selected by the WGC Diversity Committee, is Pretty Smart Popular Girls, a dark comedy TV pilot written by Jade Stone. Born and raised just outside of Toronto, Jade Stone (Sasha Alexander) has been writing since 2005, primarily broad and dark comedy. Currently, she’s hoping to find a position in a writers' room, and dreams of one day bringing Pretty Smart Popular Girls to the screen.

“Having worked with Jade on her half-hour sitcom script, what really impressed me was Jade’s willingness and ability to cut and write loads of new stories, always in the effort to make it better. I think Jade’s openness and forward-looking energy is exactly what you would look for in a writer/creator,” says WGC member Mary Walsh, who worked with Jade to polish the script.

“In my writing, I always touch on socio-economic issues," says Jade, "and with this script I’m taking a fairly direct approach to confronting racism. In this series, I’m exploring the idea that if you’re pretty, smart, and popular, you can get away with anything—even murder. But what if you’re also racialized? Who pays the higher price, and why?”

Congratulations, Jade!
